Remembering old dude Joe Dassin

Just recollecting handsome dude Joe Dassin -
by the way in accordance with wikipedia, he got his Kandidatskaya (PhD) degree in anthropology from University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI). Then, he suppose to be called Dr. J. Dassin. Or, what is more correct, Joe Dassin, PhD.

City legends tell that he spent many years living in American mid-West and even sang songs in local bars.
His native tongue was English since he was born in the USA and lived for a long time.

He spoke perfect American English with no typical French accent:
Watch "Indian summer"   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smdfm08aLQc
he was presented there in his concert as the "american" singer:

OR THE SAME  (it has better quality):   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XfkxM_nUXA

Especially listen how he pronounces 'back' and 'sand' in "slipping back on the sand", with typical mid-western accent.

Always nice listen to   Killing me softly

Lyrics of Indian summer      Killing me softly

You know, I've never been as happy as I was that morning
We were walking along the beach - a little like this one,
It was a rare kind of autumn day that you only find in North America

Over there, they call it "Indian summer",
What it was just our summer.
And I can see you now in your long dress
Looking like a beautiful watercolor
And I can remember what I told you that morning
A year ago, a thousand years ago

Think of me, when this is just a memory,
Will you still be loving me
When the summer is gone?
All my life, the taste of you will fill my life
Even when the summer is gone...

Today, I'm far away of that autumn morning
But it's almost as if I was there.
I'm thinking of you. Where are you? What are you doing?
Do I still exist for you? I'm like a wave drawn by the moon.
Slipping back on the sand, remembering high tides,
Remembering the happiness in the sun shining over the sea.
A thousand years ago, or was it just last year?

Think of me, when this is just a memory,
Will you still be loving me
When the summer is gone?
All my life, the taste of you will fill my life
Even when the summer is gone...

I heard she sang a good song,
I heard she had a style,
And so I came to see her,
To listen for a while.

And there she was this young girl,
A stranger to my eyes.

Strummin' my pain with her fingers,
Singin' my life with her words,
Killing me softly with her song,
Killing me softly, with her song,
Telling my whole life with her words,
Killing me softly, with her song.

I felt all flushed with fever,
Embarrassed by the crowd,
I felt she found my letters,
And read each one aloud.

I prayed that she would finish,
But she just kept right on.

Strummin' my pain with her fingers,
Singin' my life with her words,..

She sang as if she knew me,
In all my dark despair,
And then she looked right through me,
As if I wasn't there.

But she was there, this stranger,
Singing clear and strong.

Strummin' my pain with her fingers,
Singin' my life with her words,..

"My funny Valentine"

In 70-ies when he moved back again to a French soil he started performing not very remarkable French songs.
He was totally unknown and with his unremarkable repertoire he would be forgotten, if he had not met Toto Cutugno.
Toto was a young dude that time (sort of in his 20-ies) but talented one.

All Joe's widely known songs were composed by Toto Cutogno - only a few know about this fact.

look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuNnbU16drg   -->>

Joe Dassin was a part of music environment then in 1980-ies.

Toto wrote another good one for him, it was called "Salut, c'est encore moi", to est - "Privet, eto opiat ia".

Classy text, and it was a pity that then, we could not understand French "tres bien".

I doubt that this "Salut" song scan be ever performed in English -
English tongue has no so many rhymes as the French one.
Translation was easy, and it is below. Supposed to be close to the text :

   Hello, it's me again.
   Hello, how are you?
   Seems a long time passed.
Away from home, I thought of you

   I sailed here and there
   And now I feel tired.
   Make me a coffee,
I have a story to tell.

   Once upon a time, someone
   Someone you know well,
   Gone very far away,
He was lost, but he came back.

   Hello, it's me again.
   Hello, how are you?
Seems that a long time passed.
Away from home, I thought of you

You know, I've changed a lot.
I had ideas about you, about me, about us,
   Pretty crazy ideas,
   But I was crazy.

You do not need to talk back to me,
I'm no more than a recollection
   Perhaps not too bad.
Yet, I'll never tell you again.

   Hello, it's me again.
   Hello, how are you?
   Seems a long time passed.
Away from home, I thought of you.

Looking for Dassin over youtube..
I found that funny one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_PdYU_5UGo   -->>

People who still remembers our females from french language department at Phyztech (I hope, all of you remember) and who still can "parle" french (I hope, some of you remember - including our Montreal escapist OM Grudin ) - may understands the jokes and write us, later on, what are they joking about.

OK, to the right of Joe Dassin is Marie Laforet (Мари Лафоре -настоящее имя Майтена Думенак)
largely known to public due to one of her songs:

English lyrics of PINKY & THE FELLAS

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Manchester and Liverpool may not seem cities for romantic fools
Bustling feet and dusty streets and people living for each day
But behind the smoke and grind
A great big city's beating heart you'll find
You may roam but it's still home although you travel far away

A city, a city may not be so very pretty
But to be back, a smokestack can be a welcome sight to see.

Manchester and Liverpool so noisy, busy and so typical
Millions there with hopes and cares and happiness is their only aim
In New York and Sydney too
The whole world over, it is just as true
Where you start is in your heart
And there it always will remain

A city, a city may not be so very pretty
But to be back, a smokestack can be a welcome sight to see

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

It is a pity that Pinky and Fellas did not mention in this song Dolgoprudnaya right after NY and Sidney..

It is so true:

"You may roam but it's still home although you travel far away"
"In New York and Sydney too - the whole world over, it is just as true
Where you start is in your heart - and there it always will remain"

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And the last "recollection" - in that happy years listening to Dassin, we never had a crazy idea that not someone, but many of us, will sail away and never come back.
